Meeting at the airport
That was the view of every bowler who arrived at the airport in the South Sumatran state of Palembang before the 55th edition of the Bowling World Cup.
First of all, the welcome desk helped speed us all through passport control and customs. Every player was given a lovely scarf in local craft style.
“And we didn’t even have to go and collect our bags from the carousel!” said French player Armandine Jacques. “The welcome committee collected our baggage tickets, then went and found the bags, porters brought them over so we could check they were there. And then we didn’t see them again until we got to the hotel! Merveilleux!”
The players, officials and guests didn’t even have to travel to the hotel by road. They missed out on the traffic jams by being guided by the welcome committee volunteers to a special coach of the superb light rail transit, which took them from one side of the city to the other, from the airport to the stop near the hotel, where cars were waiting to take them the short distance to the hotel.
The organising committee had even thought about players connecting through Djakarta, arranging for a help desk there.
