Round robin complete: South Africa and Canada go to finals as top seeds

The ‘Fire Ball’ bowling centre in Krasnoyarsk was jumping this morning for the round robin, especially with the Russian player, Alexei Parshukov, doing so well. A large crowd gathered behind his lanes and cheered him to the rafters.

With just the position round to go, the top seed place was up for grabs, as was the third place. Alexei was leading Guy Caminsky of South Africa but only by 41 pins and with 30 bonus for winning, that was close. As it happened, Guy came through to win by 12 pins meaning that he goes into the stepladder TV show in top slot. John Szczerbinski of the USA could in theory move up into third, but it was unlikely. And indeed Or Aviram of Israel remained in third.
The result also means that the USA with two fourth places will win the trophy for top country.
With the women, the situation was different. After the seven games, Cherie Tan of Singapore was such a long way ahead of Danielle McEwan to secure third place and a spot in the stepladder final, that it was highly unlikely that she would be caught. And so it proved. And the top two spots were also clear. So we will see Cherie play Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic, a two-time World Cup champion, for the right to take on the top seed, Caroline Lagrange of Canada, champion in 2009.
Should Caroline win she will become the fifth woman to win the trophy three times. Should Aumi win, she will become the first woman to win three times. And whatever happens, this will be the best result for South Africa and Russia in the men’s section.
