Highway 66 Mini-Bowling is Installed on the New MSC Splendida Cruise Ship

Release date: 8/19/2009

August 19, 2009 (Mechanicsville, VA) – QubicaAMF Worldwide, a leading manufacturer of bowling and amusements products, announces that, Highway 66, a scaled down version of traditional tenpin bowling, has been installed on MSC Cruises new flagship, MSC Splendida. This is the first installation of Highway 66 mini-bowling on a cruise ship.

The MSC Splendida has two lanes of Highway 66 mini-bowling installed in its Sports Bar. It has become one of the most entertaining facilities on board, according to an MSC representative. Passengers of all ages can now enjoy a game of bowling while at sea. The unit accommodates up to 10 players at one time. No special bowling shoes are required, and the balls used are smaller than traditional bowling balls, and without finger holes.

“Highway 66 is a perfect fit for a cruise ship,” says Gian Anestis, Amusements Sales Director for QubicaAMF Worldwide. “The product was designed for facilities that want to offer bowling, but don’t have the space that traditional bowling requires. It delivers the same level of excitement, but takes up about 40% less space. It’s also virtually maintenance-free.”

Highway 66 does not require a specialized mechanic, and the lanes do not need to be oiled or conditioned like traditional bowling lanes. The game is adaptable and can be set-up to accept coins, bills, and debit cards – it can also award tickets. The fully automatic scoring system hosts several software games, from traditional tenpin based games to alternative bowling games, providing the ability to offer a new experience to guests each time they play.

The ship was christened on July 12th in Barcelona, Spain, by screen legend Sophia Loren. The arrival of MSC Splendida brings the number of ships in the MSC Cruises fleet to ten. She and sister ship MSC Fantasia, launched in Naples last December, are the largest ships ever built by a European ship owner. Each capable of carrying 3,959 passengers, these “floating cities” are 333m long, 66.8m tall and weigh 137,936 metric tons.
